The Parliament of Australia and the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea became Observer Parliaments of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organisation (AIPO), later transformed into the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in 2007, during the 2nd AIPO General Assembly, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 27 September to 3 October 1979.

Since then, Australia and the Republic of Korea have engaged with AIPA as Observer Parliaments, contributing to parliamentary dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of perspectives on issues of shared interest.

Their longstanding engagement reflects the value of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding, peaceful cooperation, and stronger connections between parliaments across regions.
