On 15 January 2026, H.E. Dr. Chem Widhya, Secretary-General of AIPA, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Sujiro Seam, Ambassador of the European Union to ASEAN. The meeting reaffirmed the strong and long-standing partnership between AIPA and the European Union through European Parliament, and highlighted the importance of multilateralism in an increasingly complex global landscape.

Both sides also exchanged views on further strengthening parliamentary cooperation, particularly as ASEAN and the EU approach the 50th anniversary of their relations next year.

The European Parliament has been an Observer to AIPA since 1980, reflecting one of AIPA’s longest and most enduring partnerships.
