Today marks 49 years since the parliaments of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand gathered in Manila to establish the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).

In his message, House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” G. Dy III said AIPA was founded so the peoples of the region would have a voice in ASEAN through their representatives. That work continues as AIPA grows.

The Philippine AIPA presidency is symbolized by the balangay — the ancient boat that carried our ancestors across the region. Its message, he said, is that amid uncertainty, ASEAN must pull together and row in the same direction.

This November in Manila, the Philippines will host the 47th AIPA General Assembly—the seventh time the Philippines holds the AIPA Presidency.
