On 17 April 2026, H.E. Dr. Chem Widhya, Secretary-General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Nicolae Ștefănuță, Vice-President of the European Parliament, in Istanbul, Türkiye.
Both sides exchanged views on regional and global developments, highlighting the growing role of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing shared challenges. The discussion also explored potential areas of collaboration, including women’s political participation, youth engagement, and climate action, as well as opportunities to strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation through AIPA’s initiatives.
The European Parliament has held Observer Status with AIPA since 1980, following the 3rd AIPA General Assembly in Jakarta.
