On June 7, 2021, the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held in Chongqing in Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Dialogue Relations.
State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Teodoro Locsin, Foreign Secretary of the Philippines that serves as the current country coordinator for ASEAN-China relations, co-chaired the meeting. In addition, other foreign ministers of the ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Secretary-General were present.
COVID-19 was an essential subject of discussion, given the fact that most Southeast Asian nations are struggling with rising caseloads and shortages of vaccines.
Another essential issue tackled during the meeting was the ongoing situation in Myanmar. The meeting also talks about the five-point consensus achieved at a recent ASEAN summit. The five-point are to ending violence, holding constructive talks among “all parties concerned,” sending aid to Myanmar, appointing a special envoy to facilitate negotiations, and the envoy being allowed visits to the country.
