ASEAN, Canada Renew Commitment to Forge Closer Ties

ASEAN and Canada reaffirmed their commitment to further advance partnership for mutual benefit at the 18th ASEAN-Canada Dialogue held on 13 July 2021.

Co-chaired by the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to ASEAN Aung Myo Myint and Assistant Deputy Minister for Asia Pacific of Canadian Global Affairs Paul Thoppil, this meeting was also attended by senior officials of ASEAN or their representatives, as well as the Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Political-Security Community, H.E. Robert Matheus Michael Tene.

The meeting underscored the importance of collaborative efforts undertaken in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, and therefore, welcomed the announcement of Canada’s contribution of CA$ 3.5 million over five years to the COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund in May 2021. They also discussed the critical regional issues of common concern, including the developments in the South China Sea, the Korean Peninsula and the situation in Myanmar.
